Former US President Barack Obama marked St Patrick's Day by sharing a photograph of himself and wife Michelle inside an Offaly pub.

Obama shared the snap with his 37 million Instagram followers on St Patrick's Day. The picture from Ollie Hayes's pub in Moneygall was taken during his visit back in 2011.

Obama included a very Irish caption: "From the O’bama family to yours, we hope you have a happy St. Patrick’s Day!" he made sure to add the apostrophe to Obama to play up his Irish connection.

Barack Obama visited Moneygall after discovering he descends directly from the Kearney's of Shinrone and Moneygall. His third great grandfather Fulmoth Kearney emigrated to the US around 1850.
