Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen has been announced as the Grand Marshall for the 2024 St Patrick's Day Parade in Tullamore.

The former Fianna Fail leader will take pride of place at the head of the parade as it makes its way through the streets of the town on March 17.

Organisers announced the news on social media. They said: "We are honoured to announce our Grand Marshall For Tullamore's St Patrick’s Day Parade 2024 is our former Taoiseach & proud Offaly man, Brian Cowen."

Locals were quick to react to the news.

One man said it will be "great to see Brian on the trailer for that day."

Another added that he was "very proud and honoured to have Brian as Grand Marshall in our Parade."

Brian Cowen was Taoiseach from 2008 to 2011 during the tumultuous economic period that saw Ireland agree to an IMF bailout.

Brian Cowen has made a tremendous recovery after being admitted to the Beacon Hospital following a major brain hemorrhage in 2019. He then spent five months in St Vincent's Hospital and later spent time at a rehabilitation centre.

He has since made a good recovery and has appeared at public events again.
