REVEALED: Offaly local elections sorting and counting of votes to be carried out in two centres

Sorting and counting of votes in the local elections in Offaly will take place at two different venues 20 miles apart, it has emerged.

On Saturday, June 8 – the morning after polling day – votes will be sorted at a centre in Birr, understood to be St Brendan's Community School.

They will then be transported 20 miles away to the community centre in Mucklagh where the actual count will start.

Cathaoirleach of Tullamore Municipal District and candidate in the local elections, Cllr Declan Harvey said it could be 7pm on Saturday evening before the count proper commences.

At the Birr venue the political parties will conduct tallies and will likely have a clear picture of which candidates are polling well.
