Unique 'Eyes on Boora' workshop to take place in June

Inspired by the HSE’s ‘Little Things’ positive mental health campaign, ‘Eyes on Boora’ is an experiential photography workshop (over 18s) which will enable participants to embrace nature and gain an understanding of its benefit for the mind and body through the camera lens.

The mindful experience will be guided by Visual Artist Aisling O’Rourke. Over the course of two workshops at the Lough Boora Parklands, meditation and discussion will be used to help settle participants into the environment and with each other before taking exploring the surroundings through photography.

Each participant will also have the option of joining a number of local celebrities in taking their photographs, including former Ireland International Niamh Kavanagh, Pauline Curley, Rose of Tralee Jennifer Byrne and Midlands 103’s Will Faulkner who hope to participate in the event. It’s hoped the day will encourage people to connect and to appreciate the little things in life.

Aisling O’Rourke holds an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the University of Arts London, College of Communication and a BA in Journalism from DCU. She is an emerging visual artist skilled in creating intimate photographic documentary and is an advocate for positive mental health awareness.

The Workshops will be held on Saturday 9th June and Saturday 16th June from 10am – 1pm. Places are limited and can be obtained by contacting Ethna Carroll, Snr. Occupational Therapist HSE Mental Health Services on 086 806 4691.

The event is funded by the HSE, Offaly Local Development Association, Mental Health Ireland and Offaly County Council and is organised under the auspices of Offaly Minding our Mental Health - a group of statutory and community organisations who come together to promote and support mental health and recovery.

Following the June workshops a series of exhibitions in Offaly County Libraries are planned for September to allow participants reconnect and to highlight positive mental health across county Offaly. It is hoped the exhibitions will highlight the benefits of this initiative to our mental health.
