9 superb wines of 2025 to snap up now

There are weekday wines, weekend wines, special occasion wines, and then there are the wines – labels which light up your eyes, tantalise the taste buds and come with the promise of pleasure.

And one of the hallmarks of these prize picks isn’t necessarily the price point, region or style; it’s the satisfaction you feel every time you pour a glass and think to yourself: “This is a wine I love to drink again and again.”

Whether it’s a slug of Spanish warmth, bold New World fruit, a seafood-loving white, drop of sunshine in a glass – the list goes on – these are some of this year’s highlights to have on hand…

1. Errazuriz Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, Maipo, Chile, £9, Tesco

Far from a one-trick pony, Chile excels at most grape varieties and its cabernet sauvignon is worth making a song and dance about. From its stable of world class wines, this top-notch producer turns out this impressively consistent, deep-flavoured red and a joy from word go. Aromatic with notes of cherries, spiced cranberry, tobacco and vanilla, similar flavours unfold with a youthful charm, enlivened by freshness on the finish.

2. Terra Organica Rioja Crianza 2020, Spain, £11.25, Ocado

A youthful Rioja with excellent credentials – organic, vegan, sustainably made, and awarded Gold in The Drinks Business Global Rioja Masters 2024. Immediately enjoyable and overflowing with a fruit basket of ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit, complemented by touches of vanilla spice on the seamless finish; not to mention engaging aromas of cassis keeping you coming back for more.

3. Jansz Premium Cuvée NV Tasmania, Australia, £13.50 (was £18.50), Waitrose

Tasmania loves to tease us with its stunning sparkle – on a par with the best – and Jansz is a gem of a glass. A trailblazer for sparkling wines Down Under, look forward to layers of flavoursome fruit framed by zesty citrus, hints of honeysuckle, touch of hazelnut, almond, brioche and enduring, fruity finish.

4. Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc 2024, Stellenbosch, South Africa, £13.99, (was £16.99), Amps Wine Merchants

A rich, complex chenin blanc, here South Africa’s signature white grape is all about creamy ripe fruit, texture and length. A sunbeam of flavour, hints of baked apple combine with juicy peach and vanilla; a delicious creaminess balanced by fresh acidity, with good concentration, and touch of citrus on the lingering finish.

5. M&S Collection Susana Balbo Malbec 2024, Mendoza Argentina, £14, Ocado

Argentina’s Susana Balbo (the country’s most awarded female winemaker) is behind this brilliant own-label. Sure to impress, expect some high-altitude mineral freshness with this stylish, sumptuous red which has ‘drink me’ written all over it. Fragrant with scents of wild flowers, a floor of ripe forest fruits are lifted by blueberry and blackberry nuances, with a persistent, long finish.

6. Two Beacons Bacchus 2023, England, £16, Two Beacons Vineyard

Worth pushing the boat out for… sparkling wines may be our strongest suit but English still whites are full of verve… and this Wine GB Silver Medal Winner 2025 more than delivers with its delightful aromas of elderflower, limey herbal notes, freshly cut grass and citrusy acidity. If you love a sauvignon blanc, the bacchus grape thrives in England’s vineyards, and the wine is a natural bedfellow with oysters, or steamed clams with garlic and spaghetti.

7. La Voute 2024, Vin de France, Limoux, France, £17.99, Laithwaites

A chardonnay lovers’ chardonnay, this is a full-bodied, creamy, rich style which showcases tropical fruits, lively peach, pear, apple and nectarine, framed by bright acidity; with subtle oak vanilla and spice on the textured, refreshing finish. Utterly delicious, this sleek wine is a top drop with bold flavours of heavier seafood like creamy fish pie, or bowl of clam chowder with crusty French bread.

8. Château d’Esclans ‘Rock Angel’ Rosé 2024, Côtes de Provence, France, £30 (£22.50 Mix Six), Majestic

A label to turn heads and set your wings on fire, this rosé rocks! When it’s time to trade up from your go-to Whispering Angel… Rock Angel is a keeper. With a beautiful bouquet and beguiling aromas of florals and exotic fruit, luscious flavours of strawberry, nectarine and creamy white peach dominate, with subtle hints of herbs, streak of minerality, finishing satiny smooth. In a word: Irresistible.

9. Porte Noire Petite Porte Rosé NV Brut Champagne, France, £48.50, The Whisky Exchange

Blink and you’ll miss actor Idris Elba’s name on his Porte Noire label – crafted by the Sanger Champagne house and worth seeking out. Crowd pleasing with its scented, bold aromas of raspberry, strawberry and brioche enhanced by a touch of white pepper, the palate reveals similar flavours with floral notes, fresh acidity and long-lasting finish. Really impressive.
