Offaly barber launches autism-friendly haircuts
Offaly barber Niall Keegan has announced that he is to commence autism-friendly haircuts at his barbershop in Clara.
Keegan, who runs Penthouse Barbershop on River Street in the town, came up with the idea through his experience of cutting hair for kids with autism in a busy environment.
"I've always felt bad with what they go through when getting a haircut, so I decided to do this on a one-to-one basis, taking the time to cater for each child and make it a more pleasurable experience," Niall said.
"We want them to be able to use the barbershop and maybe they will eventually enjoy coming to get a haircut instead of it being a traumatic experience."
The autism-friendly haircuts will be available by appointment only on the first Monday of every month. Niall will make the experience less traumatic through reduced lighting and noise levels, sensory toys and the use of a tablet for YouTube or gaming.
