The River Barrow burst its banks in Portarlington overnight and the Irish Defence Forces have been deployed to help homeowners who have been hit by flooding.
Laois Civil Defence is also on the ground helping people with sandbags and dealing with flooding in homes.
Director of Services at Laois County Council, Kieran Kehoe confirmed that localised flooding has occurred overnight in the town.
Botley Lane and Bog Road are closed. Stop and go is currently in place on Patrick Street and Laois County Council will continue to monitor the situation. It is likely that this road will close later today.
A stop/go system is in place on Barrow Bridge at Patrick Street.

Laois County Council is working with Offaly County Council in order to outline appropriate diversion routes through Portarlington town.
Mountmellick has been flooded since Wednesday and traffic going from Portlaoise to Tullamore has been diverted through Portarlington. Motorists will need for follow diversions carefully.
