Huge blow for Alex Dunne as he is disqualified after second place finish at Red Cull Ring

Offaly driver Alex Dunne's F2 Championship hopes have received a huge blow after was disqualified for technical reasons after a brilliant second place finish in the Feature Race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

After starting seventh and the grid and losing a couple of positions in the early laps, Alex Dunne drove a superb race with multiple overtakes to finish in second behind Richard Vershoor.

That result would have left Dunne in second place in the Championship but just six points behind Vershoor but his disqualification means he remains in second but is now 24 points behind the leader at the half way stage.

A press release from F2 explained how a technical infringement led to the disqualification.

"Following the Spielberg Feature Race, Rodin Motorsport driver Alexander Dunne has been disqualified.

"After the race, Car 17 was referred to the Stewards by the Technical Delegate for an alleged breach of the FIA Formula 2 Technical Regulations, specifically excessive front plank wear, with a maximum thickness of 3.37mm and 3.27mm at the periphery of two of the designated holes.

"The Stewards heard from the driver and team representative, and it was determined that there was no explanation as to why the plank fell below the minimum required thickness of 4mm, constituting a breach of Article 3.2.2 of the FIA Formula 2 Technical Regulations.

"As a result of the disqualification, all cars that finished behind Dunne in the Feature Race move up one position each."

The F2 Championship moves on to Silverstone next weekend and the Offaly driver will be hoping to get his Championship challenge back on track.
