Three people were arrested after a foot pursuit in Offaly in the early hours of Saturday morning after a stolen car was stopped at a checkpoint in the county.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Gardaí in Birr successfully intercepted a stolen vehicle during a proactive rural checkpoint on Military Road, Crinkle.

The operation, which took place around 2am, resulted in the arrest of three individuals following a brief foot pursuit.

The vehicle, previously reported stolen during a burglary in Thurles, was seized on-site. Gardaí also noted an attempt to alter the vehicle’s registration plate using black tape, a tactic designed to evade detection.

Gardai say that thanks to the swift response and vigilance of local members, the three individuals were arrested and have since been charged with the unauthorised taking of a mechanically propelled vehicle. They are due to appear before Tullamore District Court on July 9.

Gardai say the vehicle is now being returned to its rightful owner, bringing a welcome conclusion to a distressing incident.

Gardai say that this result highlights the value of targeted rural checkpoints and the dedication of Garda members working through the night to protect communities. Investigations are ongoing, and searches of the area and vehicle are continuing to identify further evidence.

Gardai are asking the public that if they see something suspicious, report it as every piece of information helps.
