FUNDING to develop the long-awaited N52 link road between Tullamore, Kilbeggan and the M6 motorway is earmarked for next year in the National Development Plan.

Tullamore based TD, Deputy Tony McCormack has received written confirmation from the Minister for Transport that the funding is in the pipeline.

"This long-awaited announcement paves the way for not only safer travel, but also for unlocking cultural, economic, and tourism opportunities in the region," said the Fianna Fail TD.

In a letter to Deputy McCormack, the Minister acknowledged the strategic importance of the project in improving road safety, reducing journey times, and enhancing regional connectivity.

The N52 link road will connect Tullamore more directly to the national motorway network, creating major benefits for local businesses and the wider Offaly economy.

Deputy McCormack stated: “This is a landmark moment for the midlands. I’ve worked alongside the local community, Offaly Fianna Fáil councillors, and MEP Barry Cowen for many years to get this project prioritised. The Minister’s confirmation that it is intended to be funded in 2026 is a real breakthrough.

The safety of our communities has always been one of the main drivers behind this campaign. This new link road will finally deliver a safer, more modern route for commuters and local families alike.”

The project also opens the door for long-awaited progress on plans supported by the Durrow High Cross Committee to establish an interpretive centre near the historic site.

Durrow is a significant early Christian monastic site, home to the Durrow High Cross and the renowned Book of Durrow, one of Ireland’s most important illuminated manuscripts.

Improved access via the N52 link road will make it easier for visitors and tourists to explore the area's rich cultural and historical heritage.

“This road isn’t just about transport—it’s about unlocking the full potential of our region. With better access, we can finally move forward with plans to share Durrow’s incredible story with the wider world,” Deputy McCormack said.

The N52 link road will also improve connections between Tullamore and major cities like Galway and Dublin, providing critical support for local businesses by reducing transport times and making the area more attractive for investment.

Deputy McCormack concluded: “This is about safer roads, stronger businesses, and celebrating our heritage. I will not stop working until the N52 Link Road is delivered and our community sees the full benefit.”
