MICHAEL Reade, former broadcaster with Midlands 103 has announced that he is terminally ill.

Michael, who was better known as Mike when he worked at the local radio station in Tullamore, hosted the popular ''All Things Considered'' programme for a long number of years. He then moved to LMFM where he has been for the past 21 years.

Michael made the announcement on LMFM after a period of absence from the programme.

''I am not well. I am actually very sick. I have cancer. And I'm afraid to say that my diagnosis is terminal. It is an illness in other words that I will not be able to recover from,'' said Michael.

He went on to say that he has accepted what he is ''facing into.''

''I am not afraid, I am not devastated. I wish it wasn't so but it is and this is not open to negotiation. It is not an argument I can win. In fact, there just isn't any argument to be had,'' he said.

Michael went on to say that he is learning to appreciate the small things in life.

''The situation I am now in is a blessing of sorts as now, I am looking at things that might otherwise have passed me by and I am getting so much pleasure from some very basic, simple things. A smiling face or a kind word, a ray of sunshine, breathing fresh air.''

Michael said his first broadcast was 43 years ago when he was just 15 years of age. ''I am very proud to say that since then I have more or less had a radio programme of my own.''

He went on to say he was proud of his work at LMFM adding that it was a privilege.

He signed off by saying ''I'll hand you back to the studio now. Thank You.''

In May, Michael received the prestigious 'Recognition of Excellence Award 2024 for Services to Broadcast Journalism' from the CVSN (Child Sexual Abuse Victim and Survivor Network). The award was presented to him by the Mayor of Dublin, Daithi De Roiste during a reception at Dublin's Mansion House.

Tributes from well wishers have been pouring in to the radio station and on to Michael's Facebook page.

Each one wishing him well at this difficult time and thanking him for his contribution to broadcasting.
