BREAKING: Man killed after being hit by truck on busy motorway

Gardai are investigating the fatal collision

GARDAI have launched an investigation after a man was killed in a collision on one of the busiest motorways in the country.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5am this Wednesday on the M6 at Ballygarraun West, near Athenry, County Galway.

The deceased was aged in his 50s.

"Following a single vehicle collision, the driver of the car exited his vehicle and was struck by a lorry. He was fatally injured and his body has been removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway where a post mortem will take place in due course," said a garda spokesperson.

According to gardai, the male driver of the truck, also aged in his 50s, was uninjured.

A technical examination of the scene is ongoing and a section of the motorway remains closed with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
