A GARDA Sergeant based in Roscrea is planning an epic sponsored cycle in aid of a charity close to his heart.

Sergeant Ciarán O'Ráighne plans to conquer a 236 kilometre long cycle for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and is also hosting a coffee morning with An Garda Síochána and Age Friendly Roscrea in the former Courthouse on Gaol Road this morning (Wed, May 10).

On August 26 Ciarán will complete a one-day solo 236km cycle from Indreabhán in County Galway to Dingle in County Kerry to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

The challenging cycle is called ‘The Making Memories Cycle’ and Ciarán is looking for all the support he can get for his very worthy cause. He is already training hard in anticipation of the feat of endurance which will be a tough challenge to complete in only 24 hours.

Ciarán chose the particular cycle route through the country because he is from the small parish where the cycle begins in Indreabhán and his mother Máire is from Ventry near the end point of the cycle in Dingle.

“This is a charity that is close to my heart and one that I hope to raise some badly needed money for,” Sgt. O'Ráighne explained.

“I would really appreciate any donation that you can give, no matter how small, and once you donate your money it will go directly to the charity and will immediately be put to good use.”

Ciaran has already raised over €6,500 of his target of €10,000 and everyone can track Ciarán’s challenge on his dedicated instagram account which can be found at @themakingmemoriescycle.

Donations can also be made online by visiting his page available at justgiving.com/ciaranoraighne
