Couple to be tried over child cruelty in the Midlands

A book of evidence was served on a couple accused of child cruelty in Laois.

The pair, who cannot be named and are both in the mid to late 30s, each face three charges of child cruelty at an address in Laois on dates in July 2021.

A sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told books of evidence had been served on both of the defendants.

The accused couple were granted legal aid when the court heard both defendants were welfare dependent.

Judge Andrew Cody imposed reporting restrictions and sent the pair forward for trial to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court on June 13.
