Roscrea's Fianna Fáil hopeful for a seat in the Dáil, Councillor Michael Smith, has been eliminated after this morning's recount of votes for the North Tipperary constituency, where Michael Lowry was elected on Saturday night and Labour's Alan Kelly is poised to take the second seat.

Following a count this morning after tense scenes in the Tipperary count centre in Thurles last night, Fianna Fáil's Michael Smith has been eliminated after the distribution of Fine Gael's, Dr. Phyll Bugler 5,000 votes.

The request for a full recount last night was cancelled and after an examination of the ballots this morning, Independent Jim Ryan was only three votes ahead of Michael Smith - while last night before the recount was suggested the results indicated that Cllr. Smith had the lead by only two votes.

Thurles Independent, Jim Ryan, who won a very impressive vote after a short campaign and competing against the heavyweights of the constituency on their home turf, is still in the race - but short of a remarkable upset it looks like he will be next eliminated and Fianna Fáil's 29-year old first time candidate from Cloughjordan, Ryan O'Meara, looks set to take the third and final seat.

Michael Smith's votes will be distributed in the next count.

The updated results from count nine are:

Alan Kelly - 11,088

Ryan O'Meara - 7,781

Jim Ryan - 6,364

Michael Smith - 6,361.

Michael Smith's votes will now be distributed amongst the remaining candidates.
