THE semi-finals of the Molloy Environmental Systems Senior Hurling Championship have been fixed for a double bill in O'Connor Park, Tullamore on Sunday, October 6.
Ballinamere will meet St Rynagh's at 2.15pm while title favourites Kilcormac-Killoughey take on fast improving Coolderry at 3.45pm. The semi-finals will be played to a conclusion on the day with extra time being followed by a penalty shootout if required.
The final will also return to O'Connor Park this year after being played in Birr's St Brendan's Park for the first time in several years in 2023.
Birr GAA Club will host a very attractive double bill on Saturday, October 5 with Coolderry and Drumcullen clashing in the Intermediate Hurling Championship final at 2.30pm, followed by the Senior “B” Hurling Championship final between Clodiagh Gaels and Kilcormac-Killoughey at 4.15pm. Referees have not been appointed yet for the games.
The preferred option for the Competitions Control Committee would have been to split the senior semi-finals, pairing them with the intermediate and senior B finals as curtain raisers but with Coolderry and Kilcormac-Killoughey in the one senior semi-final and the intermediate and senior B finals, agreement could not be obtained from the clubs for this.
If this had happened, the semi-finals would probably have been split between Birr and Tullamore but Coolderry senior hurling manager, Brian Carroll is a player on their intermediate side while Kilcormac-Killoughey senior manager, Shane Hand is also a senior “B” selector. There would also be a crossover in personnel involved in both teams and the logistics involved meant that neither club wanted a double bill, even though it would have created a great occasion for the supporters of whichever club had the two fixtures together.
The big benefit for the clubs with having the fixtures on separate days is that it will free up players from their second team to play in senior on the Sunday, if they wanted to use them – and both Coolderry and Kilcormac-Killoughey have a couple who could come into contention.
