LUSMAGH native, Anthony Sullivan has composed a special poem to mark Culture Night 2025 in which a host of creative events are being held around Offaly tonight.

Anthony, who is now based in Tullamore, also pens a weekly column in the Tribune "On the Right Trax".

BY A FOUNTAIN IN ALGHERO

By a fountain in Alghero

Solace in the soft September sun

Aware of neither day nor hour

My heart is full, and my troubles none

This timeless sea, these ancient walls

Stony streets of breathing history

Happy dogs on well-travelled routes

All signs of the blessings granted me

So I sit and smile, a stranger

In the sense only that this moment

Is but this lifetime's first visit

My soul's return, no mere accident

By a fountain in Alghero

A pause of pen on paper caused by

An incoming reminder of

How ice-cream will close tonight in joy

It's this happiness of planning

The expectation of smiles to come

Wrapped in laughter-filled adventure

Will live long after these days are done

So I sit and smile, grateful for

Being alive, and here for these days

One of five cappuccinos

All these golden mem'ries shared five ways

From how a Lemon Soda cools

And sunset-soaked balconies delight

Beaches out of sight are paradise

Second breakfasts start ev'ry day right

By a fountain in Alghero

This sum of one week's many parts

Comes down to this: Life's secret is

Love is this togetherness of hearts.
