EUROPEAN Neighbours Day in Darmagh Centre on Tuesday week last, May 30, was a resounding success. There was a great attendance from Clontarf Road residents past and present.
It was also a Bealtaine event.
Molly Buckley welcomed everyone and highlighted the importance of “neighbourliness’”– neighbours become friends and streets become neighbourhoods. She said it has been proved that children feel safer when they know their neighbours.
James Scully did an amazing presentation on the history of the Grand Canal, Clontarf Road and surrounding area.
Where Lannello and Tihilly is built was the site of the County Home Farm, where the children from Clontarf Road played.

James said at night they could hear Al Conroy playing the saxophone. “Strangers in the Night,” was a nightly treat.
Music from the Hackett’s house was to be heard day and night.
Offaly Local Development Company sponsored the refreshments. Everyone present thoroughly enjoyed the day.
