Since the launch of the Tipperary Studies digital online platform in August 2020, the site continues to go from strength to strength, and in January 2024 the site reached a new milestone of one million hits.
Archives on Roscrea feature prominently and the resource has proven invaluable for people around the world with strong links and interest in the history of Tipperary.
A hit counter was added to the website in May 2021 to monitor website traffic. On 7 January 2024, the hit counter exceeded the 1 million mark, which is a terrific achievement for a site which has primarily Tipperary focused content.
The most intriguing part was that there were 61,092 hits on the site on Christmas Day 2023, the highest ever recorded in one day since the counter was added.
The top ten countries, from which people engage with the website are Ireland, Belgium, United States of America, United Kingdom, China, Germany, Australia, France, Canada and the Netherlands.
In terms of the collections which are popular, they range from the photographic collections, such as the Munster Glass Plate collection; the John James Quinn collection (Ballypatrick, Clonmel); Michael Murphy Collection (Clonmel); the Edmond Murphy collection (Cashel/ Golden/ national); the Fr Kennedy collection (Holycross Abbey and parish), Holycross Horse Show; Ned O’Shea collection (Thurles); Paddy Loughnane collection (Thurles); Gus Butler collection (Thurles); Denis Bergin collection (Roscrea); Sport- Tipperary GAA match programmes and yearbooks; Thurles Town FC match programmes), Dr George Cunningham Archive (Roscrea and Cloughjordan) to the Poor Law Union Minute Books and Rate Books; Gravestone inscription records and many other items of a genealogical and historic nature.
The digitisation team are thankful for the support of many people who have given permission for items to be digitised from the collections housed at Tipperary Studies Archive at the Source Library, Thurles. Many people have also provided temporary access to their private collections, which are digitised and later returned to the owners, family or custodians of the various items.
All this support assists in adding to the rich content available, on free access, as part of the online services provided by Tipperary County Council Library Service.
Many more items are scheduled for digitisation in 2024, as the online content continues to expand.
