TULLAMORE and District Chamber of Commerce's Strategic Policy Group has welcomed the announcement by IDA Ireland, in partnership with Offaly County Council, of the acquisition of a 26-hectare landbank in Tullamore for the proposed development of a new Business & Technology Park.
This strategic investment represents a significant milestone for Tullamore and the wider Midlands region. It aligns strongly with IDA Ireland’s Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025–29, and we are particularly encouraged by the commitment to advance planning and design for future development on this site. Delivering a competitive, future-ready property offering is essential to attracting Foreign Direct Investment, supporting Enterprise Ireland client companies, and enabling balanced regional economic growth.
The Chamber group recognises the importance of this project in strengthening the town’s capacity to secure new employment opportunities and to support the expansion of indigenous and international businesses. Forward-planning of this scale provides confidence to potential investors and reinforces Tullamore’s position as a key location for enterprise in the Midlands.
"This is a very positive step for the town, and we look forward to continued engagement with IDA Ireland, Offaly County Council, and our regional stakeholders as this project progresses," said the statement.
The development was also welcomed by members of the Tullamore Municipal District at their meeting on Thursday.
Director of Services, Paul McLoughlin, said the land acquisition was a "vote of confidence in Tullamore"
In a statenment announcing the development, IDA Ireland said: "With the support of Offaly County Council, has recently secured a c.26-hectare landbank in Tullamore, Co Offaly for the proposed development of a new IDA Ireland Business & Technology Park. This acquisition is aligned to IDA Ireland’s core objective to enable and deliver a competitive property offering which supports balanced regional economic investments, winning Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and the growth and expansion of indigenous clients within the Enterprise Ireland portfolio."

"As outlined in IDA Ireland’s current strategy Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025-29, the agency is partnering with Local Authorities for the delivery of advance planning permits for buildings in regional locations. This site acquisition in Tullamore, Co Offaly, will enable the advancement of the building design, in partnership with Offaly County Council and subject to the statutory planning process, during the lifetime of the IDA Ireland strategy. This targeted approach to forward planning is vital in providing certainty for potential investors and to ensuring we have a competitive offering that meets the evolving needs of both IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland clients."
The CEO of Offaly County, Anna Marie Delaney commented: "It is an objective of the Council to work alongside IDA to identify appropriately sized land banks and business premises at suitable locations in Tullamore in order to attract foreign direct investment. "It is also an objective of Offaly County Council ‘s Corporate Plan 2024-2029 to foster sustainable economic growth and development in the county and build a resilient and inclusive economy, ensuring long-term prosperity for all."
Independent TD Carol Nolan said the news was particularly welcome as she had only recently appealed for enhanced supports for Offaly County Council in the context of the wider economic pressures facing Offaly.
The Offaly TD had cited job losses following the decline of Bord na Móna as well as the recent announcements of closures at Cardinal Health and Fastway Couriers in Portarlington with Tánaiste Simon Harris in the Dáil in late November:
Fine Gael TD, John Clendennen, said the move represents “a significant step forward for Tullamore and the wider county, and a strong vote of confidence in Offaly as a key driver of economic development in the Midlands.”
“I have consistently raised the need for improved investment readiness for Offaly in the Dáil, and I have met with executives from both Offaly County Council and the IDA to emphasise the importance of having the right strategic sites available to attract high-quality foreign direct investment (FDI),” Deputy Clendennen said.
“This is a landmark moment that demonstrates real belief in what Tullamore and County Offaly have to offer,” Clendennen said. “The commitment shown by IDA Ireland, Offaly County Council, and Minister Burke in advancing regional economic opportunities is clearly reflected in today’s announcement. Securing this land positions Offaly to attract new investment, support existing enterprise, and generate high-quality jobs."

Fianna Fail TD Tony McCormack emphasised that the delivery of a new IDA park in Tullamore was a core commitment of his election campaign, and that since being elected he has been working closely with IDA Ireland, Offaly County Council, and Government to progress the project. He has also brought it up multiple times in the Dáil chamber and infrastructure committee.
“This announcement represents a huge step forward,” he said. “Securing an IDA Business & Technology Park in Tullamore has been one of my key priorities. A modern, fully serviced business and technology campus is essential to attracting new foreign direct investment and supporting the growth of innovative indigenous companies. Today’s development shows clear confidence in Offaly’s potential as a driver of economic opportunity in the Midlands.”
