KILLOUGHEY Fianna Fail Cumann organised a celebration in the Beehive Pub Mountbolus to mark Danny Owens retirement from Offaly Co. Council.
Cumann Chairman, Justin Mahon opened proceedings by welcoming the large crowd in attendance and in particular Barry Cowen MEP, Tony McCormack TD, Cllrs Ollie Bryant, Frank Moran, Shane Murray, Declan Harvey, Peter Ormond and Neil Feighery and former Cllr. Eamonn Dooley.
Justin added: "Prior to politics Danny was firstly a great sportsperson representing the Carmelite College Moate where he won three Leinster and one All Ireland colleges football medals. Then representing Offaly in Football and Hurling. Picking up two senior All Ireland Medals in ‘81 and ‘85 and captaining the ‘91 Hurling team to win the league final. Danny also managed our senior hurling team to win our first county championship and went on to win 3 in a row 2012, 2013 and 2014. He missed out by just 2 points in the All-Ireland Club Final on the 17th of March 2013.
"Proposed by Liam White at our cumann meeting, Danny got through convention, and he took to Politics like a duck to water, winning the next four elections from 2004 to 2024. Danny has served with distinction over his two decades as a councilor and fulfilling the role of chairman and vice chairman."

Cumann Secretary, Justin Heffernan presented Danny with a plaque from the cumann in recognition of his time as Co. Councillor. Danny thanked the Cumann for organising the night and all who attended. He went on to say how much he enjoyed his time in politics representing Killoughey. One of his highlights was in 2011, when he welcomed President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to Moneygall.
