Great experience for duo at big pro-am

AN Offaly man and his young daughter had a great day when they went to the pro-am at the BMW PGA Chamopionship in Wentworth last Wednesday.

Mucklagh man Paul McEvoy and his daughter Roisin walked the course with English professional golfer Matt Wallace – Matt is Roisin's uncle and a highlight of her day was when she sank a 10 foot putt to big applause from from the large crowd of spectators.

They are now living in Walford in England and Paul played golf regularly with Matt before he turned professional. “You could see back then Matt had what it takes, it just fantastic to see him doing so well on both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour,” he said this week.

Paul and Roisin were also thrilled to meet with Shane Lowry as he came off the final hole, chatting him about home and they also enjoyed their visit to the players' lounge for food and drink after it.

A host of celebrities played with professionals in the pro-am, including ex footballers John Terry, Robbie Fowler, Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, comedians Michael Mclntyre, Paddy McGuinness, and lots more.

Paul was home recently when he helped organise a memorial golf day at Esker Hills Golf Club for his late brother in law, Paul Loonam – Matt Wallace sent over a lovely message for the Loonam family for that event.

“It was a magical day,” he smiled.

Matt Wallace had a fantastic finish in the main event on Sunday when an eagle at the 18th saw him finish joint 10th while Shane Lowry played very steady golf to end up in 21st place.
