Met Éireann storm update amid warnings and brutal weekend weather forecast

Met Éireann has given an update on a potential storm tracking towards Ireland this weekend with a number of weather warnings issued.

Weather experts are monitoring the potential low system which has yet to be named with Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly saying the "latest charts for Sunday’s potential storm with track back a little further North and could bring more heavy rain but strongest winds might stay South of us."

He said he "will be keeping a close eye on the track of this one over next couple of days."

Meanwhile, Met Éireann's outlook predicts "rather mixed weather over the next few days and quite cold too for this time of year" as well as issuing a series of warnings for Sunday.

They have issued a Status Yellow rain warning for Cork, Waterford and Wexford for Sunday until midnight with "persistent rain, heavy at times" predicted. They say this may lead to "localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions", particularly in these counties, but also elsewhere around the country.

In the meantime, they say Friday "will be cool and breezy with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in a moderate to fresh northerly wind, backing northwest later and easing.

"Cold tonight [Friday] with good clear spells. A few showers drifting in from the Atlantic too, mostly to northern and western areas. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 6 degrees with some grass frost likely in light winds."

The forecast continues for the weekend: "Saturday will be mostly dry with scattered cloud and good sunny spells at times. A few showers will develop in places. Light to moderate westerly winds will fall light later in the day and back southerly, with highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

"Rain, heavy in parts, will spread up from the southwest, over much of the country during Saturday night and Sunday, reaching the north coast Sunday afternoon, and accompanied by fresh to strong and gusty easterly winds. Some spot flooding may occur in parts too. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees.

"The rain should turn more patchy on Sunday evening and night with a lighter northerly breeze setting in. Lowest temperatures of around 7 to 10 degrees.

"Monday will bring dry periods but with some scattered outbreaks of rain too. There will be some brighter spells too with temperatures likely to be in the low to mid-teens, in a light to moderate northwest breeze.

"Tuesday looks set to bring good sunny spells and just a few scattered showers, especially near northern and northwestern coasts. Highs of 11 to 14 in a light to moderate north to northwest breeze.

"Dry on Tuesday night, and cold with clear spells leading to some mist and fog patches. Some grass frost too with lowest values of 1 to 5 degrees.

"Brightening up on Wednesday with sunny spells, before it turns wet and breezy again later in the day or overnight. Highs of 12 to 14 degrees," the latest forecast concludes.
