Councillors remember Ashling Murphy and second anniversary of her death

Councillors at the January monthly meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, remembered the late Ashling Murphy and the second anniversary of her death which is tomorrow January 12.

Cathaoirleach, Councillor Declan Harvey said he was still affected by her death. Describing it as heartbreaking, he said he was Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council when the tragedy occured.

''It saddens me deeply to think this young girl's life was taken the way it was. I just want to offer the family my continued support.''

Councillor Danny Owens, said, ''Ashling was so savagely taken away from us two years ago. Her Anniversary Mass is tonight (Thursday January 11) at 7pm in Mounbolus and a big crowd is expected,'' he said.

Continuing he added ''Every day you go to town there is something going on in relation to Ashling in trying to keep her memory alive and keep her habits to the forefront and only good can come from that,''

Cllr Neil Feighery also said he wanted to join in remembering Ashling at this time. ''Her tragic death will remain with us all. We will gather again in Mountbolus to celebrate her second anniversary Mass, It's testament to the family and their strength and determination to remember the work that has been done and the Ashling Murphy memorial fund and scholarships that have been handed out,'' he said.

''There is a memorial walk for Ashling tomorrow afternoon along the Grand Canal at 3.15pm and everyone is welcome to attend, People will walk in memory of Ashling,'' said Cllr Feighery.

Councillor Sean O'Brien said he also wanted to be associated with the remarks. ''It affected us all countrywide and internationally. The great dignity of the family at her sad passing and at the recent trial as well. They set a great example for the whole country. I want to wish them personal condolences,'' he added.

Councillor Tony mcCormack said all of the members join in their support for the family at this time.
