Sean Rigney presenting his Irish rugby jersey to Tullamore RFC president, John Burns
TULLAMORE Rugby Club were delighted to be presented with the Irish jersey worn by a former player at their awards dance on Friday evening.
There were loud cheers as Meelaghans man Sean Rigney presented his Ireland jersey to club president John Burns and it will join a growing collection on display at their club rooms in Spollanstown – a lineout specialist, Rigney was capped by the Irish clubs' team in the past year.
Rigney is one of four former Tullamore players who will be playing with Terenure College in Division 1 of the All-Ireland League in 2025-2026.
With Tullamore relegated back to junior ranks in 2025, the loss of some players was inevitable and Terenure have a real high profile now after appointing a New Zealand hero, flyback Carlos Spencer as their head coach on a three year contract.
He is one of a number of players who have received international recognition in the past season after graduating through Tullamore Rugby Club underage ranks. Cormac Izuchukwu won a full mens' cap while Jordan Conroy played for the sevens. Aoife Dalton was the 6 Nations ladies player of the year while Megan Burns has been a star for the sevens side. Mountlucas man Paidi Farrell is on the Irish U20 squad.
John Burns paid a glowing tribute to Sean Rigney, outlining his progress up the underage ranks at Tullamore Rugby Club. “He was always fit as a fiddle, like his father Larry who runs and runs,” smiled Mr Burns.
Rigney won U18 D'arcy Cup, and U20 league and cup medals with Tullamore in 2018, quickly establishing himself on the senior team in Division 2C of the All-Ireland League. He then went to Young Munster, competing with them in Division 1A of the All-Ireland League and moved to Australia to play rugby, before a “serious health setback” saw him return home.

Mr Burns outlined: “It is a testament to the fitness and resilience of the man that not only did he get back to playing at the highest level in AIL club rugby but was capped by his country's club team this season. A truly remarkable comeback.”
Accepting the jersey, Mr Burns concluded: “A true gent of the game, we wish him all the best for the future.”
