The proposed site for the Floating Walkway on the Callows beside Shannonbridge.
A FLOATING Walkway is being planned for the Callows in Shannonbridge.
A recent meeting of Offaly County Council was told that funding for this project, to the value of €218,275, was announced in July 2024 by Fáilte Ireland under the EU Just Transition Fund's Regenerative Tourism & Placemaking Scheme for Ireland's Midlands 2023 to 2026.
The project has engaged an architect led integrated team to design, up to planning stage, a proposed public amenity area in Shannonbridge, on a vacant site on the Main Street.
The team will design a “Plaza” area, together with the Floating Walkway over the site on the Shannon Callows, having completed the environmental assessments appropriate to the Callows and the adjoining habitat. A parking survey of the village will also be carried out.
Following a competitive tender competition, Daniel Woodroffe Group Ltd were appointed on the 1st of September to undertake the project. An open community engagement event was held on October 9 last in the Shannonbridge Community Centre for everyone in the community to share their thoughts and views on the proposed project. A member of the local community told the Tribune that in general the locals are “positively engaged” with the project and think it will be a good thing for the area. A second consultation session will take place in Shannonbridge Community Centre this Thursday November the 6th from 3pm to 7pm. Once again people are being invited to drop in and share their thoughts on the emerging designs for the Callows Plaza. Meanwhile, the constructionwork by Waterways Ireland on a floating jetty in the village is nearly complete. Locals are very happy with this construction project, which consists of 108 metres of floating jetty along with an access ramp and a freeboard for canoe access. The jetty has been anchored by steel piles and has been anchored to a 2.5m square concrete plinth.
