AUSTRALIAN Ambassador HE Ms Chantelle Taylor has arranged to visit Lorrha on Tuesday next, July 1st.

HE Ms Taylor succeeded HE Mr Gary Gray who spent four years in the post. Ambassador Gray was instrumental in facilitating the Homecoming of the Victoria Cross awarded to Martin O’Meara to his native parish on August 13th 2022. His predecessor, HE Richard Andrews was also most supportive of the VC Homecoming which was postponed because of the pandemic.

Both HE Gary Gray and Richard Andrews visited the parish on a number of occasions.

HE Ms Taylor’s visit has been arranged in conjunction with The Lorrha Martin O’Meara VC Committee. The Committee is delighted to welcome the ambassador to the parish and to continue the relationship with the Embassy which has developed due to the recognition of the many people from Lorrha who served with the Australian Imperial Force during the Great War.

Her Excellency will be accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission, James Hazell as well as other representatives of the Australian Embassy.

She will visit the Lissernane homeplace of Martin O’Meara VC, Lackeen Castle as well as Lorrha village.

The ambssador will also participate in a Commemoration Ceremony to remember the many people from Australia, Ireland and Lorrha who served in the Great War.

The ceremony which is timed for 12.45pm will be held at the Martin O’Meara VC/Great War Memorial in Lorrha.

Usually, the Lorrha Commemoration Ceremony is held around Anzac Day, April 25th.

This year, the ceremony was postponed pending the visit of the ambassador.

As this postponed Anzac Ceremony is being held on July 1st, it will include recognition of those who served during the Battle of the Somme, which battle commenced on July 1st, 109 years ago.

Specific reference will be made to Martin O’Meara VC who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroism during that prolonged battle.

All are welcome to attend the Ceremony.
