THE pagan festival of Bealtaine was marked by the Slieve Bloom Association over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
The group decorated a May Bush in Mountmellick to coincide with the festival, a sacred time which was seen by our pagan ancestors as being the beginning of a new and warmer season in the year.
Slieve Bloom Association also holds events to coincide with the pagan festivals of Imbolc and Lughnasa during the year.
There was a good attendance for the group's AGM in the Poet's Cottage, Camross on April 20th.
A new committee was elected as follows: Chair - John Rigney, Secretary - Sinead Dolan, Treasurer Matt Barrett.
The May Bush festival and the annual day away were discussed, amongst other issues.
The next meeting will be held in Kinnitty Community Centre on Thursday 18th of May at 8pm. New members are welcome.
For our ancestors Bealtaine marked the beginning of the pastoral summer season, when livestock were driven out to the summer pastures.
