A case of illegal dumping at a cemetery in Offaly has caused major outrage.

The incident in Banagher has been reported to Offaly County Council amid a reminder to locals from local councillor Clare Claffey.

"I've reported the dumping of rubbish at the cemetery in Banagher to the environment section of Offaly County Council and hopefully this will be dealt with quickly," she said.

Alongside a photograph of the dumped items beside a 'no dumping' sign at the graveyard, Cllr Claffey added: "Please if you are visiting loved ones could you bring your rubbish, including dead flowers, wreaths etc, with you."

Locals were quick to vent at the incident with one pointing out that the same has been occurring at Birr cemetery.

"Awful that people will leave a mess like that," another said, while a third comment read: "My God,what is wrong with some people?"

Another local labelled it as "pure laziness," adding that it is "easy to bring [rubbish] with you on your way back home."
