Plans to set up a new Men’s Shed in Roscrea

Public consultation meeting to be held in the town next week

Plans to set up a new Men’s Shed in Roscrea

A public consultation meeting will take place in Roscrea on February 15th to explore the possibility of establishing a Men’s Shed in the town.

The meeting is being organised by North Tipperary Development Company (NTDC) which has a dedicated Men’s Sheds Support Worker to support Sheds in the region. The meeting will take place at 7pm in the Muintir na Tíre hall, Chapel Lane, Roscrea.

The Men’s Shed movement started in Australia in the 1980’s and quickly spread internationally and is now extremely popular in Ireland. With 435 Sheds around the country, Ireland now has more Sheds per capita than any other country in the world. There are five Men’s Sheds in North Tipperary – Littleton, Thurles, Silvermines, Nenagh and Borrisokane - each of which is engaged in a wide variety of activities such as woodwork, crafts, computers, DIY, music/singing, genealogy etc.

The Sheds also contribute to various community projects, in a relaxed and informal way, as above all else, the Shed is a social space where all are welcome and everyone who attends can be involved at their own pace. Mike Ryan, the NTDC Men’s Sheds Support Worker states “In fact, it could be said that the most important tool in the Shed is the kettle!”

Mike Ryan further commented that “Men’s Sheds have proven to be beneficial, not only for the men who attend the Shed but also for the wider community in which the Shed operates” and he highlighted that "the establishment of a Men’s Shed in Roscrea could be a very positive development for the town”.

Anyone interested in getting involved in setting up a Men's Shed in the town is invited to attend.
