Man charged in connection with fatal assault of a woman in the Midlands

A man has been charged in connection with the fatal assault of a woman in the Midlands.

A man in his 30s arrested as part of the investigation into the suspected fatal assault on a woman that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 14 in Mountmellick has been charged.

He is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court this morning.

The woman who died has been named locally as Sharon Crean. She was discovered with serious injuries at approximately 4:45pm at a residence in Mountmellick, County Laois on Wednesday evening.

She was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Office of the State Pathologist was notified and a post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday. The results of which will determine the course of this investigation.
