RIP: Tributes paid to Offaly man who left behind ‘a legacy of kindness’

Hundreds of tributes have been paid to John ‘Moses’ Sammon, a much-loved taxi driver in Offaly who was a talented goalkeeper in his sporting days.
“It is with great sadness that we at Devine’s Hackney & Bus Hire have learned of the passing of Moses, a very special man who worked with us for over 25 years,” Devine’s Hackney & Bus Hire posted in a tribute on social media.
“Moses was truly one of a kind. An absolute gentleman in every sense of the word, he was a man who earned the respect and affection of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Over more than 25 years, he became so much more than a colleague to us — he became part of the Devine’s family.
“People like Moses are rare. His kindness, his character, his quiet dignity and the person he was cannot be measured simply in years of service. He gave us over a quarter of a century of loyalty, friendship and memories that we will always treasure. It was a privilege to have him as part of our team, and his loss will be felt deeply by all of us,” the post said.
“It is never easy to say goodbye to someone who has been such a big part of your working life for so long. We will remember Moses not just for the years he gave to Devine’s, but for the wonderful man he was. The world is a little poorer for his passing, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness and friendship that will never be forgotten”.
The company extended its heartfelt and deepest condolences to his beloved wife Kathleen, his family, and all those who loved him.
“Rest in peace, Moses. Thank you for everything over the past 25 years. It was an honour to have you as part of our family, and you will never be forgotten.
“A true gentleman, one of a kind, and sadly missed,” the tribute said.
Hundreds of tributes were posted in response to the post by Devine’s.
Clara Town FC also expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Moses Sammon, describing him as “an absolute gentleman”.
“A goalkeeper is the backbone of any team. What a legend Moses was, he won Clara Town many a trophy over the years with his ability to save at least 2 penalties every time…. No better man to step up and score a penalty as well!!” the club posted
It added that “some great memories and stories were being told around the club,” following the death of their former player.
Coolraine FC also paid tribute to one of its founding members while GAA clubs also extended sympathies.
Shamrocks GAA posted: “John was a former player with our club, and we remember his connection to Shamrocks with fondness. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Kathleen, his sons, extended family and all who knew and loved him at this difficult time. May they find comfort and strength in the days ahead”.
