Gardai are appealing for information following the assault and attempted robbery of a man in Portlaoise on Thursday evening.

“Portlaoise Gardaí are investigating an attempted robbery and assault in Portlaoise yesterday evening, Thursday on the Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise,” Gardai stated.

The victim, a man aged in his 20s, received medical treatment after the assault but is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Gardai are particularly interested in any sightings of two males in the area around the entrance to Portlaoise Train Station on the Mountmellick Road between 5.30pm and 6pm. They said one of the males was cycling a dark coloured mountain bike.

Gardai said traffic was very heavy in the area on Thursday evening and it's possible the individuals were captured on dashcam. It's believed low fuel prices at a filling station on the Mountmellick Road resulted in the heavy traffic exiting Portlaoise.

If anyone saw anything suspicious or has dashcam footage from the area they are asked to please contact the Garda Detective branch at Portlaoise on 057 867 4134.
