7: Left half back – John Furlong (Tullamore)

It is a sign of the defensive excellence of Tullamore that you could make a case for giving them the entire half back line. Oisin Keenan-Martin and Kevin O'Brien also had some excellent games for them but John Furlong has to make this team. Like a lot of the Offaly U-20 All-Ireland winning squad, it took Furlong a bit of time to come down from that high and get his body right but his influence became more and more profound as the championship progressed. He came on as a sub in the group draw with Shamrocks and semi-final against Ferbane and his performances in the two county finals just took the breath away. He did a supreme marking job on Ruari McNamee in the drawn match and his performance as a defensive utility player earned him man of the match in the replay. Furlong is one of Offaly football's brightest prospects.
