A RHODE man was sentenced to three months imprisonment during last week's sitting of Tullamore District Court.

Jamie Murphy, 9 Hillview, Rhode, was charged with a number of theft offences.

These included stealing €15 of groceries from Dunnes Stores, Edenderry on January 30, 2025 and stealing €26.32 of groceries from Aldi, Dublin Road Edenderry on March 11, 2025.

He was also charged with obstructing a Garda after being told he was going to be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act in Sweeney's Filling Station Forecourt, St Mary's Road, Edenderry on September 16, 2025.

The defendant was charged as well with handling stolen property, an electric scooter, in Sweeney's Filling Station, on September 16.

The defending barrister told the court that Mr Murphy is 18 years of age and pleaded guilty to the offences “at an early stage."

"These offences happened during a troubled period in his life when he was homeless and was sleeping rough", the barrister said.

"He stole the groceries to sustain himself during this tough period. At the time he was suffering from a heroin addiction. His father passed away from a drug overdose. My client is now on a methadone programme. He has a good relationship with his grandparents and they hope to guide him along the right path.”

The barrister pointed out that the owner of the stolen scooter got his scooter back.

Judge Andrew Cody then sentenced as stated.
