RIP: Tributes paid to 'absolute gentleman' from Offaly following sad passing

Tributes have poured in following the sad death of Offaly man Micheál Grennan who has been described as "a great character who always had a smile and a chat", and "a great storyteller".

Micheál, Main Street, Ferbane, passed away on September 24, 2025, peacefully with his family, after a short illness, in the loving care of the staff of the Brosna Ward at Tullamore Regional Hospital.

He was in his 90th year and was predeceased by his beloved parents Michael and Mary, brothers Johnnie and Eddie and sister-in-law Gretta.

Micheál will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving sister May, nephews and nieces, Ann Marie (Tierney), Joe, Sean, James, Edel (Waldron) and Paula (Munslow), grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, neighbours and many friends.

Heartfelt condolences have been left on RIP.ie, from those who knew and fondly remembered Micheál from Grennan's shop onover the years with one mourner writing,

"Sincere Sympathy to May, Joe, and all the Grennan family on the sad passing of Micheál. We had the pleasure of doing business with the Grennan Family for oven 50 years. Always enjoyed Micheál's sense of wit and fun always up for a laugh Micheál was a great conversationalist and had a great love of history. Micheál may you rest in peace."

Another wrote, 

"So very sorry to hear this sad news of the passing of Micheál, a gentleman and a lovely character. I remember from my secondary school days being served in Grennan's shop. Such a lovely happy, kind soul. May you rest in peaceful sleep Micheál. Condolences to Joe and all the Grennan family."

While another wrote,

"Sincere sympathy to May, to Joe, and to all the Grennan family on the death of Micheál. Fond memories of Micheál in the shop, always friendly and good humoured, may he rest in peace."

Funeral Arrangements

Micheál will repose at the family Funeral Home, Ferbane (R42 HW25) today, Thursday September 25, from 5pm to 7pm.

(Additional parking available in the adjoining Church Grounds)

Micheál's Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 26, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ferbane, at 11am and may be viewed here, and will be laid to rest afterwards in Clonmacnoise.
