Plans to demolish a derelict building in the centre of Birr to make way for a residential development have been rejected by Offaly County Council

The building, located on Bridge Street and Moorpark Street, is in a walled compound on the site of the old foundry yard.

The proposed development would have the seen the construction of a four-unit residential development. It was planned to construct three two-storey townhouses to the north-east and a rebuilt two storey building to the south-west on Moorpark Street consisting of a two bedroom dwelling, vehicular entrance gates, bin and cycle storage.

The plans also included the provision of landscaped private open space, five car parking spaces, proposed boundary treatments, pedestrian entrance, signage, connections to services and all associated siteworks.

In its decision to refuse permission, Offaly County Council noted that the lands have Constrained Use in the Birr Local Area Plan and that the proposed development was in an area subject to flooding.
