Gardaí in Wicklow have urged all road users to take care on the roads this Christmas following an incident on the N11 Southbound at the weekend.

Arklow Fire Service and Arklow Gardaí were alerted to a vehicle which went on fire after a motorist fell asleep behind the wheel. The sole occupant of the vehicle escaped without injury.

In a statement, gardaí said: "Arklow Gardaí were alerted to a vehicle on fire on the N11 Southbound. First to arrive at the scene, Garda members spoke to the only occupant of the vehicle who luckily escaped injury after falling asleep behind the wheel.

"With great assistance from Arklow Fire Service the vehicle has been removed from the scene.

"We urge all road users this Christmas to take care while driving on our roads and if you feel tired to pull over safely and take a break from driving."
