Green light for Aldi to construct ESB substation in Tullamore

OFFALY County Council has given the go ahead to Aldi for the construction of a single storey ESB substation and switchroom on lands at and between O'Connell Street and Offaly Street, Tullamore.

The demolition of the old Texas site began in the middle of May to make way for an Aldi supermarket.

The Texas site is zoned as an opportunity site and a plan was submitted in 2020 by Weavermay, headed up by Tullamore businessman Tony Flanagan, for a single-storey dual-height 1,664 sq. metre retail store to include an off licence. A three storey 874 square metre retail/office unit and a two-storey 281 sq metre cafe.

In June of this year Aldi submitted a planning application to Westmeath County Council for a new €6.8M store to be located in Moate.

Aldi is aiming to open the store in Autumn 2025, creating up to 30 permanent jobs, while up to 50 jobs will be supported during the construction period.

Once open, the 1315sqm store will have 117 car parking spaces available for customers and 13 bike parking spaces. It will also provide four electric vehicle charging points, while the store will be powered by 100% green electricity and will feature 245 solar panels on the roof.

Commenting, Donald Mackay, Managing Director of Operations, ALDI Ireland said: ''We are delighted to submit our plans for a store in Moate and to commit to further investment in Co. Westmeath. At a time when everyone is dealing with rising costs, the ability to offer our customers the best value at locations most convenient to them matters more than ever.''
