A garda was attacked by a man following a public order incident in the Midlands earlier this year, a court has heard.
Martin Lawrence (29) 105 MacEoin Park, Longford, was charged with resisting Garda David Gerrity arising out of an incident on March 4, 2023.
The court was told by Sergeant Mark Mahon, for the State, of how Garda Gerrity had been in the process of responding to a disturbance on Longford town's Main Street at the time the alleged incident before the court was alleged to have occurred.
Sgt Mahon said two males had been observed “pushing in the street” when gardaí stepped in and separated the pair.
He said it was during this struggle that Garda Gerrity was “pushed to the ground” before being struck on his head on a number of occasions from the accused.
Sgt Mahon said Garda Gerrity managed to get back on his feet soon after and able to “forcibly arrest” Mr Lawrence.
Alongside the charge of resisting a garda, Mr Lawrence was also charged with using threatening or abusive behaviour.
The court was informed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had given consent for summary disposal, allowing the case to be tried and disposed of within the parameters of the District Court.
The case was put back to a sitting of Longford District Court on October 3, with Mr Lawrence also being remanded on continuing bail.
