An Offaly County Councillor is battling a serious illness and was sent best wishes by his Council colleagues during a meeting this week.

Cllr Seán O'Brien told Monday afternoon's monthly meeting of Offaly County Council that he wanted to send his best wishes to Cllr Ken Smollen "who is going through a serious illness and is undergoing treatment. I want to wish him a good recovery."

Cllr Declan Harvey commented that as Chairperson of Tullamore Municipal District he wanted to wish Ken the best of luck with his treatment and that he enjoys a good recovery going forward.

Cllr John Foley wished Cllr Smollen 'a quick recovery' and Cllr Neil Feighery, on behalf of the Fine Gael group in the Council, said he wanted to wish Ken well as he battles this serious illness.

Cllr John Leahy said he and Cllr Smollen often disagree with one another over the issues raised in the Council chamber but added, "I want to wish him the very best during this particular challenge and I hope he will be back in the Chamber soon where we will no doubt be continuing our battles!"
