A sign maker in Offaly has come up with a novel way of highlighting the poor condition of roads in his area.

The ‘Caution Road is in Shite, take er handy’ and ‘Pot Holes as Big as Badgers’ signs are up outside the sign business for almost two months. They have gained a bit of attention locally and on social media.

Gary Farrell, who runs Nevada Signs in Newtown near Rhode in Co Offaly with his brother Dale,  placed the signs outside his business in order to highlight the state of the roads and warn motorists.

Speaking to the Express, Gary said there are Slow Down signs everywhere and nobody really pays much attention to them.

He explained that “the road was in shite” and that the signs have highlighted the problem as the locals were tired of calling the council. He said there are now people stopping “morning, day and night” to take pictures of the signs.

One twitter user who spotted the colourful warning signs on posted images of them online.

“Local political activism at its very best. Never change #Offaly, never change,”  Coleman Dennehy Tweeted.

Meanwhile, Gary said the council came out and carried out some repairs but he believes a much bigger resurfacing job is needed on stretch of road.
