An incoming spend of €6 million on roads in North Offaly has received a warm welcome.

Fine Gael councillor Noel Cribbin said it will be the largest ever funding allocation for the area in the roads programme for 2022.

The Edenderry councillor said he was "delighted with the funding for 2022, and in particular, over €2 million for a specific improvements grant for the Edenderry inner relief road phase 1 and 2 and €200,000 for works on the Tesco Roundabout."

He added: "In fairness to Offaly County Council and to local engineer Mark and his team, they are really pulling out all the stops to make this inner relief road happen and to the highest standards, and now with this funding secured, all works can carry on and the different phases be completed."

"There are over 100 different road works to be completed in 2022 in the roads programme all over North Offaly and all areas are getting their share."

Some of the main works in the Edenderry area are below:

Surface Reconstruction & costs on Regional Roads: St Conleths Rd (Carrick Rd) €90,000; Shean €24,000; Rathmore €84,000; Ballybryan €42,000

Surface Dressing: Cloncannon €20,000; Kinnefad €11,000; Ballykilleen €20,000; Ballyfore/Clarksville’s €19,700; Clonmore Cross €19,800; Corberstown €16,500; Clongarett, Cloncrane and Ballinowlarth €38,500

Paving repairs: JKL St, Edenderry €83,000; Community Involved Scheme, Rhode canal footway adjacent to R-400-4 €26,138

Noel Cribbin continued: "Other issues I raised with Mark and got confirmation on are a pedestrian crossing for Francis St/Gilroy Ave Junction, also road resurfacing of a section on Francis St to be carried out in 2022."

"Residents in Clonmullen were concerned and unaware of works ongoing in their area. I requested that a flier be distributed to all homes in the area outlining works and completion times."

Cllr Cribbin said "the monthly Municipal District meeting was, as usual, a very busy meeting with a lot to discuss and with lots of very positive works ongoing like the roadworks in Clonmullen, Carrick Rd, demolition and update on Tesco Site.

"In my 23 years as a councillor, I have never seen so many projects going on at the one time and it’s all good and positive news for the residents," he concluded.
