An Offaly student who studied at DCU has made history by winning a prestigious medal.

The DCU School of English said it was delighted to congratulate Luke Condron, who made history at last week's graduation ceremony as the first student from the BRE programme to receive the prestigious Killeen Medal.

“Pictured alongside Dr Michael Hinds, Head of the School of English, Luke had even more to celebrate on the day! A man of many talents, he was heading straight from his graduation ceremony to Tullamore, where he was due to perform in a Strictly Come Dancing event,” the university posted on social media.

“Congratulations to Luke on this wonderful achievement!” DCU added.

His former school, Coláiste Choilm also offered its congratulations to their former student.

“A huge congratulations to past pupil Luke Condron on this fantastic achievement! Luke made history as the first recipient from DCU’s BRE programme to receive the prestigious John Killeen Medal. We are very proud if you Luke!” the school post said.

In 2003, Dr Brenna Clarke, then head of the English Department, initiated the John Killeen Medal, which is awarded annually for excellence in English.

John Killeen was born in 25 June 1932 and died on 23 March 2002. In 1964, he commenced his career as a lecturer in English in St Patrick’s Training College (as it then was; its faculties have since been subsumed into DCU), and he retired from his position as head of the English Department in 1996.
