Borrisokane's busy Main Street 'badly needs' a car park

New car park would improve town but proposal remains stuck in limbo
A LOCAL Councillor pointed out last week that the town of Borrisokane "badly needs" a car park somewhere just off its busy Main Street.
Cllr Joe Hannigan commented that the issue has been raised a few times in recent years and local business people are keen for it to happen.
“Local business people feel that it will be better for their businesses if there is a car park option for shoppers on Main Street,” he remarked.
Barry Murphy Roads Engineer commented that the need for a car park has been “a long term issue in Borrisokane. The problems are finding a location and finding the necessary finance. To be honest with you, the matter really hasn't progressed since it was first mooted a number of years ago.”
Cllr Joe Hannigan commented that perhaps someone could lease an area to the Council. Liam Brett, Director of Services, replied that in general the Council doesn't enter into lease agreements with members of the general public.
Turning to a separate matter, Cllr Hannigan pointed out that the Ballyfinboy River running through Borrisokane is overgrown with weeds and undergrowth and needs to be cleared out.
He added that a section of the road from Carrigahorig to Portumna has deteriorated quite badly and needs to be resurfaced. “It's the N65 and therefore a TII road,” remarked Mr Murphy. “We often notify the TII about our priorities but it doesn't mean that the TII will prioritise it."
