Short film "Lanes of our Lives" premieres on Killaun Bog

Aoife Kirk, Project Co-ordinator/Community Engagement Officer Connecting Communities with Peatlands, heading into Killaun Bog to show the short film that Catherine compiled along with Brian Molloy.

CATHERINE Molloy's short film "Lanes of our Lives" premiered last Wednesday on the picturesque Killaun Bog. This event was hosted in association with Killaun/Cullaun Meitheal, St Brendan's Community School, and Connecting Communities with Peatlands.

The premiere is part of the broader Connecting Communities with Peatlands project, a three-year community capacity building initiative funded by the National Just Transition Fund and Carbon Tax Fund and led by Irish Rural Link and the Community Wetlands Forum. Since 2021, the project has empowered local communities to engage with peatlands in innovative ways, promoting the wise use of these areas through arts, heritage, tourism, education, conservation and recreation.

Operating across the Wider Midlands Region, including Offaly, Connecting Communities with Peatlands has delivered numerous training courses and workshops. These range from community development needs, such as relationship building and succession planning, to specific ecological knowledge, as well as recording biodiversity and heritage.

A highlight of the Connecting Communities with Peatlands initiative is the ‘Digital Folklore, Stories, and Mapping’ training course. This free, eight-week course, hosted by the project and delivered by renowned Irish Folklorist and Artist Michael Fortune, equipped participants from peatland communities across the Midlands with skills to document their local heritage.

Participants, including Catherine Molloy, learned to use their smartphones to film interviews and documentaries, record folklore, and share their content online. They also learned to utilize online archives and libraries to tell stories on film.

"Lanes of our Lives" is one of the many films produced by participants of the Digital Folklore course. This screening event on Killaun Bog not only showcases Catherine Molloy's artistic achievement but also highlights the shared heritage, folklore, and culture of peatland communities in the Midlands.
