Trial continues of man accused of sexual assaulting young girl

Trial is taking place at Tullamore Circuit Court

THE trial of a man accused of sexually assaulting a female juvenile is continuing this week at Tullamore Circuit Court.

An 11-person jury is hearing evidence because on the first day one juror became unwell and was discharged by Judge Sinead McMullan.

A 64-year-old man has denied sexually assaulting a girl, aged between eight and nine, on dates unknown between April 28, 2018 and July 3, 2019.

In order to protect the identity of the alleged victim the accused man cannot be named.

He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of allegedly sexually assaulting the female.

The trial was opened last Thursday by Shane Geraghty, BL, (instructed by Offaly State Solicitor Sandra Mahon).

The accused is represented by Colm Smyth, SC, and Aislinn Finnegan, BL (instructed by Jack Donoghue, solicitor, Ballinasloe).
