New social housing at Kingswood, Arden, Tullamore

TENANTS have been moving into new homes in a social housing development off the Arden Road in Tullamore.

There are 77 residential units in the Kingswood estate and 31 houses were allocated to people on the housing waiting list in the first phase in February.

Tenancy agreements for the remainder are due to be completed this month.

The first 31 units at Kingswood Drive were purchased by an approved housing body, Respond, which teamed up with Offaly County Council for the project.

The 31 houses were bought by Respond on December 12 last for €12,456,746, including VAT.

A spokesperson for Respond said earlier this year that 21 of the houses are two-bedroom bungalows, six are two-bedroom, two-storey houses and four are three-bedroom two-storey homes.

These homes will be safe, secure, lifetime homes for families who will be looking forward to building a community within their development and with the existing community. Respond will be there to support them to do this and develop links with the existing community in Tullamore also. As an Approved Housing Body and service provider, Respond have over 17, 000 tenants around the country with a tenant satisfaction rate of 89%,” the spokesperson said.

According to builders Carroll O'Keeffe, the houses are built to the highest standards of energy efficiency and sustainability.

The overall development in the area, which is on the east side of the Arden Road, also includes plans for a 90-bed nursing home and some of the houses are specifically designed for the requirements of elderly people and those with increased mobility needs.

Elsewhere in Tullamore, Japanese Knotweed has been removed from a site called Dargan Drive at Chancery Lane, Tullamore, where the council plans to build 20 housing units.

The project will be at stage three of the four-stage approval process once ESB lines on the site are placed underground.

At the Silverbrook development, which is on the Arden Road in the town, 15 tenancies have been allocated.
