Fianna Fail TD Tony McCormack says challenge is to build thriving urban centres

OFFALY'S towns and villages have always been the backbone of our communities, but declining footfall, vacant buildings, and changing shopping habits have created real challenges. If we want thriving town centres that attract people, businesses, and investment, we need to take action now.

The 2025 Town and Village Renewal Scheme is one example of how we are beginning to breathe new life into our local communities. This funding could support towns like Banagher, Birr, Portarlington, Edenderry, Tullamore, and Clara, as well as villages like Shinrone, Geashill, and Bracknagh, helping to tackle vacancy, improve public spaces, and boost local economies.

One of the best examples of community-led renewal in Offaly is the Kilcormac Development Association (KDA). Their work in revitalising the area has been hugely impressive, and their plans for the future are even more ambitious.

“The KDA is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a clear vision,” says Deputy Tony McCormack. “Their work is making a real difference in Kilcormac, and it shows how investment, combined with local leadership, can rejuvenate our towns and villages.”

Much of the funding for Kilcormac’s development comes from the Just Transition Fund, which is another key example of how we can support areas in transition and create new opportunities.

One of the biggest challenges in our town centres is the number of vacant buildings sitting idle. The Government’s “above the retail unit” refurbishment grant, included in the Programme for Government, is designed to help turn these spaces into homes. This would bring more people into our town centres, increasing footfall and creating more demand for shops and services.

McCormack has had discussions with various Ministers on this matter and is hopeful new schemes and funding will be forthcoming.

While online shopping is convenient, strong local businesses create jobs, better services, and a more vibrant community. More people in town centres means more high-quality retailers, cafés, restaurants, and public services.

“If we want thriving town centres, we have to support them,” says Deputy McCormack. “That means shopping locally when we can and investing in our main streets. More people living and shopping in town means a stronger local economy for everyone.”

Tourism is another key part of Offaly’s economy, and well-maintained, vibrant town centres encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more, and support local businesses.

To truly transform our towns and villages, we need fresh thinking and collaboration between government, local authorities, businesses, and communities.

“We have to work together and think outside the box in how we can reinvent our towns and villages, especially with all the modern challenges facing us,” says Deputy McCormack.

The 2025 Town and Village Renewal Scheme is just the beginning, but much more needs to be done.

“I will continue to push for investment in Offaly’s towns and villages,” says Deputy McCormack. “We have the potential to transform our town centres."
