A SHORT film by students of Boher National School recalling the 2012 theft of St Manchan's shrine from the local church has scooped a major award.

The story begins back in December, when 4th and 5th class students from Boher NS attended the Roscommon Arts Centre for the film festival.

The project involved several key contributors, including Aideen McHugh, Creative Associate with Creative Schools and The Arts Council of Ireland, and Lee Williamson, Creative Director at Shuttermaniac Productions, along with the school’s teachers.

The students showcased their short film titled "Down With That Sort of Thing," a comedic re-enactment of the 2012 theft of St. Manchan’s shrine from St. Manchan’s Church in Boher. Boher National School was announced as the overall winner of the festival.

The film featured interviews former Principal, Anne Casey and local historian, Eamon Larkin, who shared their recollections of the notorious theft. Local Gardaí also made a cameo appearance.

As part of the prize, the school received 30 Samsung Tablets and a 55” Samsung Flip Pro Digital Flipboard. On Thursday morning, January 16th, 2025, Darran Shaw, a representative from Samsung, visited Boher National School to present the equipment.

The current principal Paul McKeon was very thankful, saying: "The whole experience, from the workshops to the festival, was incredible for our children. Believe it or not, we were actually in the process of purchasing a set of tablets for the school, so the timing couldn’t be better!

The money that we had commissioned for new tablets can now be spent on other IT resources here.

This new equipment will make a significant difference to our students’ learning experience. I am truly grateful to Lee, Aideen, Darran and all the school staff for their efforts in making this happen.

I hope this whole campaign inspires more children to engage in such extracurricular activities."
